ABOUT THE FILM

AN INTRODUCTION TO THRIVING IS A SERIES OF SNAPSHOTS (VOLUMES) FOLLOWING SOUTH AFRICAN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT, KIREN, AND HIS GROUP OF FRIENDS AS THEY NAVIGATE LIFE IN A DREAMSCAPE NEW YORK, INCLUDING; ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE SAFE SPACES, SENTIENT DEMONIC BACK-PACKS, AND THE DARK INFLUENCE OF AN ANARCHIST MANIFESTATION OF KIREN’S DEAD DOG, MR. DAPPER.

I MOVED TO NEW YORK, FROM CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA AT EIGHTEEN-YEARS OLD. THE MOVIE IS LOOSELY-AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL. “AN INTRODUCTION TO THRIVING” ARE THE MAJOR THINGS THAT STUCK WITH ME, OVER THE COURSE OF MY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT JOURNEY, AS CORE FOUNDATION-BUILDING MOMENTS — ADDRESSED AS THEMES IN THE FILM. “FOUNDATION” IS THE KEY, THIS PROJECT IS ABOUT TAKING THE FIRST STEPS TO OVERCOME YOUR SHIT. THIS IS AN INTRODUCTION, THE BASICS, THRIVING 101.

I CONSIDER THESE SIX CORE FOUNDATION-BUILDING MOMENTS:

1. LEARNING TO COPE WITH LOSS IN A NEW COUNTRY.

2. DEFINING MY IDEA OF HOME WITHIN SURVEILLANCE CULTURE, COMMENCING CONSTRUCTION.

3. LEARNING TO LOVE MY BODY AND SEXUALITY (NOT THAT THOSE ARE EXPLICITLY LINKED).

4. HOLDING MYSELF ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE PAIN I’VE CAUSED.

5. CONFRONTING PREJUDICES, BOTH HELD BY ME, AND TOWARDS ME.

6. LEARNING TO OVERCOME THE PAIN I’VE FELT.
